Tips

NOVEMBER

Tips provided by Betty Thacker, Green Thumbs Garden Club & Simpsonville Garden Club

  • Rake leaves! A quicker method is to mow over them with a mulching attachment and then re-mow with a leaf catcher on your mower. Put the collected shredded leaves on a compost pile rather than letting this great natural resource be taken to the landfill! The compost pile may be something as simple as piling them in a back corner of your yard, simple wire fencing shaped into a large circle or a commercially made compost bin.
  • You may plant shrubs and trees with an established root ball. Don't plant bare-rooted items until December and later.
  • This is a good time to prepare the sites of new beds and tree locations. The cold weather makes this heavy work more enjoyable. Adding organic matter like ground leaves will gradually degrade during the winter and be ready for spring planting.
